For my final news report I found an article in the New York Times titled Agency Reduces Forecast for Oil Consumption. The article was published on November 10, 2009 and written by Jad Mouawad. The World Energy Outlook said that oil consumption will not rise as much as they expected. The Outlook forces on emissions leaked out into out atmosphere and depleting our ozone layer. Experts predicted that oil consumption would continue to rise but with alternate fuels being used numbers have risen very little. More technology advances in cleaner in alternate fuels will help slow oil consumption all around the US. With the technology advances this will help our atmosphere and the world. The oil consumption is about half of what experts had predicted. I really liked this article and found it informing. People need to start car pools, walking, or riding bikes to help out anyway they can with preserving nature. The article made me not feel as worried like most people are because other alternate fuels are being made. Oil costs are so high today companies have to develop a new product to help citizens. Companies who develop these alternate fuels stand to make a high profit from their new cash fuel cars. Car companies would have to install a new device for the engines to run off of. New cars would be invented and would have to be sold in order to run off the fuel. Society has to do something about the problems facing us environmentally or suffer the consequences.

The article is titled “Google Steps Into Another Market: GPS for Phones.” The article was written by Miguel Helft and published on October 28, 2009. Google seems to be taking over the world a little at a time. Every search you perform on Google saves into a database and a file just for you. On Google users can do about anything they want from searches to business site hits. Google has now invented a GPS for your phone. The old GPS systems are not current information, costly, and require expensive updates. Google is offering this for free to users on customers cell phones. 21 percent of American adults own a GPS device of some kind, and Google figures the numbers will grow with their free software. Google hopes to be able to sell ads on the applications and possibly turn a good profit from the software. The feature will always be connected to the Internet and can alert you if traffic is bad ahead. The maps will be updated for free and it is up to cell phone companies if they will allow Google to launch the application. I really like this application for phones because it can be useful, and best of all free. On a personal note, if the application ever makes it to the iphone I would download it and use the software on trips.

My article was written by William Neuman and published on October 12, 2009. Neuman’s article tells about the rising costs of Wings and a new trend catching on. I would say for most American’s they consume at least 1 to 3 pieces of chicken a week or wings. Wings are very popular now with franchises across America specializing in numerous different types of wings. The cost of 1 chicken wing is now more than the cost of a chicken breast. Many restaurants have switched over to boneless wings or done away with there wing specials since the higher prices have came. Boneless wings are pieces of chicken friend into a similar look format of a wing with sauces. Boneless wings are an advantage to some who do not like bones or the mess it causes us while eating our wings. I really love all types of wings and even if the prices rises and restaurants prices will follow I still plan on eating wings when I feel the need. Pizza Hut and Wendy’s both now offer boneless wings on their menus. The cost of wings will continue to rise until the super bowl most people say. One owner said that the wings were meant for people to buy more beer and I completely agree. There is nothing like a good 10 piece of wings and some cold ones.

My article can be found in the global business section of The New York Times. Ford introduced a new car called the Figo. Click the link here http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/24/business/global/24ford.html?_r=1&ref=business The title of the article is, “Ford Hopes New Figo Will Help It Win Asian Buyers.” Figo translated in Italian means cool. I really do not like the looks of the car, and I do not feel it fits my style. I like a more luxury, high dollar, powerful sports cars and the Figo is the complete opposite. This is something new for Ford. It’s targeted for the car market in the Asia and Pacific regions. Ford has generated ideas from India because they build cheap hybrid cars and India has a demand for efficient hybrid cars. Ford has not been bailed out by the tax payers like other competitors during the recession, but they have lost well over a billion dollars. India is leading in the technology field of hybrid cars. The thing that amazes me is that Ford did not list the gas mileage or the price of the new Figo. General Motors replica of the Figo is the new small compact Spark, being brought out later this year in India. Toyota and Volkswagen are going to cash in and release a new car in the India market. If I had a couple of billion dollars lying around I believe I could create a spectacular and stunning car that would sell in any market too.

I chose to write my my article review on Megan’s article about Southeast Asian countries trying to control what is said on the Internet. They have arrested numerous people who blogged bad information or their own ideas about the government. In Malaysia, the colonial-era Internet Security Act allows muzzle bloggers who violated the law to be jailed without trail for up to two years (paragraph 10). The United States allows us to voice our own opinions or political views and the right to a speedy trial. It is very difficult to monitor what is said on the Internet and extremely costly. In addition to cost they are very time consuming when writing new programs. In the article its says, “Indonesia and the Philippines do not monitor their citizens.” Internet freedom advocates fear the possibly all governments will monitor every purchase or ever twitter we tweet.

Vinny’s blog was about Bernard Madoff’s properties being sold to pay back victims of his ponzi scheme http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/09/business/09madoff.html?_r=1&ref=business . I agree with Vinny in that there will be no way to restore the $65 billion that Madoff’s scheme achieved. The properties are worth multi-millions, but that will not account to repay all of the victims. The 3000 square foot home in Montauk is for sale and really fits my style, just not my budget. Madoff now resides in a federal prison located in Butner, North Carolina serving multiple terms over double his age of 71.

BP offshore drilling

BP has struck gold again! However, with this new finding comes a big challenge! BP has joined forces with Petrobras and ConocoPhillips to find oil. The new companies are there to help aid the high cost of the new drilling and potential giant oil fields found in the deep Gulf of Mexico. BP’s concern is how much oil is down below the Gulf. This area they have found is shockingly deeper than the world’s tallest mountain. Thus, being why it will take over three years to reach. Cost are going to be extremely high for the drilling because of the depth. The drilling into the Gulf will be the longest offshore drilling expedition ever by and company. BP is one of the first companies that is taking a risk like this to invest a major drilling operation in the Gulf, because it’s hurricane prone. The last hurricanes that came through and hit the drills cost millions of dollars to investors, consumers, and BP. The cost of gas rose immediately after the drilling pipes were down. The Gulf supplies a quarter of our nation with crude oil. During the hurricanes that hit the rigs in 2008 we felt oil prices rise here in North Carolina. If BP is successful, maybe they could produce and control half the oil Americans use. Possibly lowering gas costs to everyone in the states would be a great result, it will just take time.

The Walt Disney Corporation bought Marvel and gains exclusive rights to the Marvel characters. I found my article online in the Media and Advertising Business section of The New York Times. The article was big news and was featured on the main page of the Business section. Disney realized they had the attention of younger girls with Miley Cyrus and other princess figures. With the purchase of Marvel, Disney hopes to capture the attention of younger boys. Disney used cash and traded some of it’s own stock to buy the Marvel Empire, which consists of 5,000 different characters. Disney plans to create a new line of toys, movies, figurines, and cable television. Disney will have an entirely new line of Marvel products in their theme parks. The deal is reported to be worth 4 billion dollars. After the sell, Disney’s shares dropped while Marvels grew rapidly. Disney still stands to make huge sums of money from this deal just by the movies alone especially since they have joined forces with major movie companies such as Paramount, Sony and 20th Century Fox. The Incredible Hulk, X-men, Spider Man, and Iron Man were all major Marvel movie hits. Some of the major movies have contracts out for sequels. I feel this information could be very helpful if you invest and know the stock market well. Disney will profit and gain the attention they want from the younger boy group. Appealing to both male and female is a plus for Disney with Marvel to the rescue.
